LEEDS, Ala. -- After quickly picking up the track layout last week in a two-day test, Sebastian Saavedra topped the time chart in the first practice session for the Firestone Indy Lights race at Barber Motorsports Park.

Driving the No. 27 Team AFS car on the 2.38-mile, 17-turn road course, Saavedra posted a best lap of 1 minute, 17.7126 seconds in a session that immediately followed Rolex Grand-Am qualifying. Victor Carbone was second in the No. 3 Mav TV/Nevoni/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car (1:18.4128) and Oliver Webb was third (1:18.4835) in the No. 7 Lucas Oil/SSM car.

"From where we were when we tested here last week it’s a very different condition because of all the tire compounds with the Rolex and the GT cars," Saavedra said. "But at the end we’re still very competitive. We’ve shown that we have a strong pace, mostly for a long run."

Next up for the 21-year-old Colombian and the rest of the Firestone Indy Lights field is qualifying at 9:40 a.m. (ET). The second session planned for March 29 was cancelled because of exceptionally wet track conditions, but the forecast for qualifying and the 40-lap race April 1 is for clear skies.

"It’s very important, the qualifying session around here, because if you do bad in qualifying it’s very hard to pass." Saavedra said. "So we’re very focused on having a fast car for qualifying session, and a very consistent car for a race because the tires go very easily around here."

The race gets the green flag at 12:15 p.m. (ET) and will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network on April 5 at 5:30 p.m. (ET).
