Guerrieri tops first day of practice at St. Petersburg
MAR 23, 2012
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Esteban Guerrieri posted the quickest lap of the day on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit. Now he just has to repeat the effort in the 40-minute qualifying for the season-opening St. Petersburg 100.
Guerrieri, who was runner-up to Sam Schmidt Motorsports teammate Josef Newgarden in last spring’s race, recorded a best of 1 minute, 7.3874 seconds on his final lap of the humid 40-minute session.

“We weren’t pushing 100 percent because we want to save that for qualifying,” said Guerrieri, who’s driving the No. 11 Ironbox/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car. “We were just trying to work on the car and try to be a bit quicker. The track is getting better, we put a bit better tires and went out to do two laps with those tires and then that’s it.
“So here we are, and at least we have good information to analyze tonight and for tomorrow’s qualifying.”
There’s a six-hour gap between morning qualifications and the 45-lap race (3:30 p.m. ET; taped for broadcast at 5 p.m. ET March 29 on NBC Sports Network).
“The track actually is quite nice, probably a bit bumpy in the first corner but it has good grip. We are going quicker already than last year’s pole, and so I think it’s fun.”
Gustavo Yacaman, driving the No. 2 TMR-Tuvacol-Xtreme Coil Drilling car, was second with a best lap of 1:07.4002. Sebastian Saavedra was third (1:07.4776) was third in the No. 27 TEAM AFS car and Victor Carbone checked in at 1:07.6987 in the No. 3 Mav TV/Sam Schmidt Motorsports car. Carlos Munoz, making his Firestone Indy Lights debut in the No. 26 Andretti Autosport car, also cracked 1:08 with a best lap of 1:07.9942.
“I think qualifying tomorrow morning will be really quick,” Yacaman said.
