Enzo Fittipaldi Wins First, Second Career Poles in Same Day
4 HOURS AGO
Enzo Fittipaldi continued his scorching start to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course weekend by sweeping the INDY NXT by Firestone poles Saturday morning.
Fittipaldi turned a lap of 1 minute, 9.3690 seconds in the No. 67 HMD Motorsports entry to earn the first two poles of his INDY NXT career while establishing a new series track record. The previous mark of 1:09.7431 was set by Dennis Hauger last season.
Fittipaldi, the grandson of two-time Formula One World Champion, two-time Indianapolis 500 winner and 1989 INDYCAR SERIES champion Emerson Fittipaldi, posted the fastest lap with just under five minutes remaining in the second qualifying group. His second-best lap also was quick enough to secure pole for Sunday's race.

"It was great to set the pole for both races, to break the track record as well," Fittipaldi said. "Very happy. Just looking forward to the race and getting it done."
Race 1 begins Saturday at 1 p.m. ET, with Sunday’s Race 2 scheduled for 10 a.m. ET. Both races air on FS1, FOX One and INDYCAR Radio powered by OnlyBulls.
Salvador de Alba joins Fittipaldi on the front row for Race 1 after qualifying second with a lap of 1:09.5936 in the No. 17 HMD Motorsports entry. It marks the first front-row start on a road or street course in de Alba's INDY NXT career. His previous best qualifying effort on a road course was fourth, while his best starting position this season was sixth at Detroit.
Fittipaldi earned the right to choose the second qualifying group after leading Friday's practice. The second group typically benefits from additional Firestone Firehawk tire rubber on the racing surface, producing more grip and faster lap times.
Conditions also were considerably cooler Saturday morning. Air temperatures were 78 degrees, 16 degrees lower than Friday's 94-degree practice session, the hottest of the season.
HMD Motorsports locked out the top four starting positions for Race 1 and three of the top four Race 2 as rookies Jack Beeton (1:09.6120) and Tymek Kucharczyk (1:09.6453) qualified third and fourth, respectively, for each. Beeton's previous career-best starting position was fourth at Road America.
De Alba starts eighth on Sunday.
Alessandro de Tullio's streak of nine consecutive front-row starts ended as he qualified sixth for Race 1 in the No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing entry with a lap of 1:09.6569. However, he will start alongside Fittipaldi in Sunday's Race 2 after qualifying second with a lap of 1:09.6702, his 10th front-row start in 12 races this season.
Fittipaldi also has an opportunity to gain ground in the championship. He enters the doubleheader 27 points behind points leader Nikita Johnson, who qualified fifth for both races.
Saturday's Race 1 marks just the fifth Independence Day race in INDY NXT history. The previous Fourth of July events were held at Kansas Speedway in 2004, won by Thiago Medeiros; Watkins Glen International in 2009 and 2010, won by JR Hildebrand and JK Vernay, respectively; and Mid-Ohio in 2021, where Kyle Kirkwood took the checkered flag.
